December 9 Midweek Service
O Lord our God, we stumble as those lost in the night.
Will not day come soon?
We live burdened by the sorrows and cares of this world.
Will you help us soon?
We hear the promise of your Word made flesh:
Christ is coming soon!
We long for the light of your salvation.
Come and save us soon!
HYMN OF LIGHT “When Peace Like a River” ELW #785
Let us pray. O Lord our God, we long for your coming.
Grant us patience in our waiting.
Shower us with your peace.
Lead us to live as your holy people.
In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
WORD - Zephaniah 3:14-20 - A Song of Joy
Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel!
Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem!
The Lord has taken away the judgments against you, he has turned away your enemies.
The king of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more.
On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem:
Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak.
The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory;
he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love;
he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival.
I will remove disaster from you, so that you will not bear reproach for it.
I will deal with all your oppressors at that time.
And I will save the lame and gather the outcast,
and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth.
At that time I will bring you home, at the time when I gather you;
for I will make you renowned and praised among all the peoples of the earth,
when I restore your fortunes before your eyes, says the Lord.
TIME OF SILENT REFLECTION
CHORAL MEDITATION "All Earth is Hopeful" ELW # 266
4 Mountains and valleys will have to be prepared;
new highways opened new protocols declared.
Almost here! God is nearing, in beauty and grace!
All clear every gateway, in haste, come out in haste!
All Earth is Hopeful - by Alberto Taule - 1st stanza in Spanish -
2 All earth is hopeful, the Savior comes at last!
Furrows lie open for God's creative task:
this, the labor of people who struggle to see
how God's truth and justice set everybody free.
3 People of Israel, you heard the prophet tell:
"A virgin mother will bear Emmanuel";
she conceived him "God with us," our brother, whose birth
restores hope and courage to children of this earth.
5 We first saw Jesus a baby in a crib.
This same Lord Jesus today has come to live
in our world; he is present, in neighbors we see
our Jesus is with us, and ever sets us free.
CANDLE LIGHTING (if you have an Advent wreath, use that, or any candle...)
Stir up our hearts, O Lord, to prepare the way for the coming of your Son.
Give us courage and faith to proclaim, in word and deed,
the good news of your coming, even as we wait in patience
for that day when Christ will come again. Amen. (light candles)
God of hope, you shed your light in the darkness of this world. Grant that we may always live in the promise of your Word made flesh. O God for whom we long, come and save us soon!
God of mercy, you comfort all in need of your tender care. Watch over those who are sick, those who mourn, and those who struggle in the midst of holiday joy. O God for whom we long, come and save us soon!
God of peace, establish your justice in the nations of this world, that all may strive for the good of your creation. O God for whom we long, come and save us soon!
God of joy, fill our world with the light of your presence, that we may share the good news of Christ’s coming. O God for whom we long, come and save us soon! Amen.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. AMEN
Brothers and sisters,
we are lost in the night no more,
but live in the promise of Christ.
May God, who sends light to overcome all darkness,
grant you grace, mercy, and peace. Amen.
EVENSONG "Now the Day is Over" ELW #570
Now the day is over, Night is drawing nigh;
Shadows of the evening Steal across the sky.
2 Jesus, give the weary Calm and sweet repose;
With Thy tend'rest blessing May mine eyelids close.
3 When the morning wakens then may I arise
pure and fresh and and sinless in your holy eyes
4 Now the day is over, Night is drawing nigh;
Shadows of the evening Steal across the sky.
Go in peace. Christ is coming soon.
Thanks be to God.
